Merino wool is not just any wool. It is soft, breathable, moisture wicking, temperature regulating, and basically the Beyoncé of fibers. With the right care, your beanies and headbands can look brand new season after season (even when winter is personally attacking us every year).

Let’s walk through how to store them, clean them, and keep them looking fabulous.

How to Wash Your Merino Wool

First things first: treat your merino gently. It may be fierce, but it is still delicate.

Hand Washing (Highly Recommended)

  1. Fill a sink or bowl with cold water.
  2. Add a small amount of gentle wool wash or mild detergent. I recommend this one.
  3. Submerge your beanie or headband and press gently to soak. No scrubbing. No wringing. No aggressive wrestling.
  4. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes.
  5. Rinse with cold water until no suds remain.
  6. Press out excess water by gently squeezing, then roll in a towel and press again.

Drying

  • Lay flat to dry on a clean towel.
  • Reshape if needed. Give those stitches a little fluff and alignment.
  • Never hang it because it will stretch.
  • Never use heat. Dryers are the enemy.

Spot Cleaning

Got a tiny mark or makeup smudge? No need for a full wash.

  • Use a damp cloth with cold water.
  • Gently dab. Do not rub like you are trying to erase history.
  • Let it air dry.

How to Store Your Merino Wool

Proper storage keeps your knits looking crisp and protects them from stretching, pilling, and unwelcome fuzzy pests.

During the Season

  • Store flat on a shelf or in a drawer.
  • Avoid hooks, hangers, or stuffing into coat pockets like a goblin.
  • Keep away from rough zippers, Velcro, or earrings that snag.

Off Season Storage

Think summer vacation for your knits.

  • Wash before storing.
  • Fold neatly and store flat.
  • Place in a breathable cotton bag or box.
  • Add cedar chips or lavender sachets to naturally deter moths. Bonus: it smells fancy.

Avoid plastic bags or airtight containers because wool needs to breathe.

Extra Tips for Keeping Them Beautiful

✨ Pilling happens. It is natural. Use a sweater shaver or a fabric comb to gently remove pills. This one is my favourite.
✨ Rotate your knits to help them keep their shape.
✨ Give them rest days. Just like we all deserve.

Final Cozy Thoughts

Merino wool pieces are investment accessories. They are meant to last, comfort, and become part of your winter identity. Treat them with love and they will give it right back by keeping you warm, cute, and wildly complimented.

You are not just wearing a beanie. You are wearing art.
With the right care, it can be forever art.
